Descriptions

The years that comprise a student’s academic experience in secondary school, the middle school through high school years, are a unique period in one’s lifetime. This is a time of change, from childhood to young adulthood, and with this change comes challenges, opportunities, and a broad-range of new experiences. During these years, an important aspect of human development that impacts a person’s future is his/her education. To this end, American High School offers a multitude of academic options and programs for our students. It is important to carefully consider these options and to become familiar with the requirements for successful progression from middle school to high school and postsecondary education.

School administrators, teachers, and counselors are key individuals in helping to guide students in making smart choices to optimize each student’s academic experience. It is my hope that each student take advantage of the information available on our website and of the assistance provided at American High School to plan an academic path that leads to success during the secondary school years and, ultimately, as a productive member of society..

MJ WORLD HISTORY

In this course, you will expand your understanding of history by studying the people and events that ushered in the dawn of the major Western and non-Western ancient civilizations. Geography is of special importance in the development of the human story. Emphasis will be placed on learning about the everyday lives, problems, and accomplishments of people, their role in developing social, economic, and political structures, as well as in establishing and spreading ideas that helped transform the world forever.

You will analyze the interactions among the various cultures, emphasizing their enduring contributions and the link between today’s and ancient worlds. You will demonstrate your learning by completing activities, practices, applications, and unit projects. You will need to conduct outside research to complete some of these assignments.

  • In Unit 1, we will explore various topics that will introduce you to a conceptual understanding of World History. The first lesson will introduce and refine your citation skills. It is important to take this time to fully understand the process of doing accurate research. More importantly, this lesson will help in your writing process, where research plays an important part.
  • In Unit 2, we are introduced to a cornerstone of the ancient world: Ancient Greece. Ancient Greece took many concepts from ancient Africa and made them very widespread. These concepts include democracy, epic poetry, and hand-to-hand combat. You will also engage with some of the differences in the various societies within Greece, including an in-depth comparison of Sparta and Athens.

MJ PHYSICAL SCIENCE

Students in grade six continue to deepen their knowledge of the life, earth, and physical sciences through more complex investigations and explanations. The concepts they study become increasingly abstract in a developmentally appropriate manner to allow for the slow, incremental development of these cognitively complex ideas.

Seventh graders also continue to develop their investigative skills by generating their own questions, recognizing and explaining the relationships among variables, and critiquing the conclusions that are drawn from scientific investigations.

  • Scientific progress is made by asking meaningful questions and conducting careful investigations.
  • Scientists use tools to collect, organize, and analyze data while conducting investigations.
  • Matter is described by its properties and may undergo changes.
  • Matter exists in various physical states, which are determined by the movement of that matter’s particles.
  • Matter can be classified into elements, compounds, and mixtures.
